Terrace Room @ Omni William Penn Hotel

When I was staying at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, I got to experience a part of their historical part, their restaurant called the Terrace Room. This hotel screamed history from the moment I waked in, which was awesome.

The Terrace Room is located on the left side of the lobby, and they serve breakfast buffet for the guests, brunch, lunch and dinner. I was interested in their Afternoon Tea but since I was in Pittsburgh for business, I didn’t have time for that… The inside the restaurant was a really nice, big space. The first I noticed was a huge mural on the wall. It was quite impressive both in size and artwork. It is called “The Taking of Fort Pitt” depicting British soldiers and Native American from 1763. Interesting!

There were plenty of seating, and the architecture was really amazing, They have original molded plaster ceiling with mahogany arches. Beautiful chandeliers and elegant atmosphere. This restaurant was opened in 1916, and I got to peek into the history even just a little but by being in this space.

I have had my share of hotel breakfast buffet, some good, some just ok, and some that was not so great. At this historical restaurant, I was hoping I will get a good surprise. They also offer breakfast menu if you prefer to order food instead of having the buffet. For me, I wanted an easy, fast breakfast, so I went with their Art of Breakfast Buffet ($22).

The variety of the buffet was pretty nice, I was liking what I was seeing. They had scramble eggs, which I always go for at a buffet. One thing about scramble egg on a buffet table is that with them being under the heat lamp or on heated pan for a while, the eggs get a bit over cooked than my preference. But, they really can’t do anything about that unless you special order the scramble eggs… Anyways, I heard they use  cage-free eggs, which was nice.

They had nicely looking pancakes, and then bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy…and they all looked pretty good. The patty is their signature “blueberry maple sausage patty” that does not contain hormones or other additives. Nice! I had to try that one for sure.

What I found that was really cool was their selections of butter! They had French butter, Goats butter, and Irish butter. How cool is that? Even though I wasn’t getting any item that needed butter, but I wanted to get them just taste the difference… I didn’t do it, but I so wanted to!

As I moved along the line, I saw a plate full of smoked salmon! I had to get me some of that… They looked really nice and fresh, and thickly sliced. Not one of those kind that are so thin that it falls apart while I am trying to get onto my plate. This was great!

They also had fresh fruit, yogurt, and cereals. I liked how they had some organic fiber rich cereals, as well as lots of Cheerios. I love Honey Nut Cheerios, and yes, they had that too.

They had a few options when it came to milk too. I like my cereals with milk, and having options of them are awesome. They had some kind of fruity smoothie-looking shot, right by the cereals. I didn’t know what it was, but I was curious enough to take one. It was more watery to be smoothie, but more flavorful than straight fruit juice. It was not sweet, but it was refreshing.

And let’s now forget their baked goods. They had savory and sweet artisan breads, lots of it. They had sliced breads, bagels, muffins, croissants…etc. They also offered gluten-free breakfast breads. Great for those who are allergic to gluten, or just prefer to have gluten free bread.

Unfortunately, I was not super hungry, so I didn’t get as much as I wanted to try. I did get some eggs, breakfast potatoes, smoked salmon, blueberry maple sausage patty, mini muffin and fresh fruits. They were all pretty tasty and I had no complaints. Their special sausage patty was juicy and packed with flavor, and smoked salmon was meaty and fresh. They were not amazing, but I was happy with their offerings.

As I mentioned, I took one of the small juice-shot thing from near the cereals. It was more watery to be smoothie, but more flavorful than straight fruit juice. It was not sweet, but it was refreshing. Coffee, Tea and Juice is included with the buffet, and I asked for a green tea. A nice pot of tea came with small jar of honey. Love putting honey in my black tea, but I never put anything in my green tea.

But then, I realized that the server mistakenly brought me a black tea… Oh well, I didn’t really mind it, so I had it as is, instead of asking him to replace it with green tea as ordered. It was whole-leaf tea so it tasted pretty good.

Other than the minor mistake with my tea order, the server was very nice and friendly. Food was better than I expected, especially the selections. I wish if I was hungry enough to have more… Regardless, I had a nice breakfast here, surrounded by rich history. Really enjoyed the experience!
