Food on Plane: Delta

I wrote about food on plane on other airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic, JAL, and ANA. We went to United Kingdom in the fall/winter of 2019, and the flight back from U.K. to New York was with Delta. We flew on Delta Comfort+ for more legroom. The first thing we got was a complimentary “Welcome Cocktail” for any and all adult customers. How nice! It was Peach Bellini, made with Delta Master Cuvee by Mionetto sparkling wine, with a splash of a Hella Cocktail Co. Peach Bellini Premium Mixer. It was nice and sweet, bubbly, and refreshing drink to start off the flight.

Now, the food. Before they served us the meal of our choice, they brought hot towels around for everyone, which was great! I chose Gnocchi in Basil Cream Sauce with Prosciutto and Melon as my appetizer.

Gnocchi had cherry tomatoes and toasted pine nuts in them. It was creamy, plump, and had a good amount of seasoning. I heard that the seasoning needs to be stronger up in the air, as our taste buds can’t taste as well as they can on the ground. I didn’t get much pine nuts, but that was ok. I wanted it to have more basil flavor though. Prosciutto and melon was really nice, fresh, ripe, and tasty!

I asked for Bailey’s Irish Cream over ice to go with my meal. I love Irish Cream… Why not have a dessert drink with meal?

My hubby went with Marinated Chicken Breast, with Fruit and Cheese as his appetizer. Chicken came with jasmine rice, green beans, and Hollandaise sauce. Appetizer part was basically a slice of cheese, grapes, and almonds. They were tasty, ripe and substantial.

It came with a nice large piece of chicken, and the sauce was quite tasty. The chicken was cooked well, not too tough either. Being coated in the sauce helped it from being dry. The rice was nice addition to the chicken, and so was the beans.

We got some hot coffee after the meal to accompany our dessert. I liked how they use Starbucks coffee here, since we like Starbucks, we enjoyed them!

The dessert was Beckleberry’s Salted Caramel Ice Cream I am used to getting Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream on JAL, so it was a nice little change. It was creamy and tasty, nice salted caramel flavor. I enjoyed it.

When we were getting close to NYC, it was time for meal and beverage once again. I asked for Sparkling Wine, and they gave me Zonin Sparkling Prosecco Cuvee 1821 NV. It was fresh, fruity, and a nice drink to wake you up before arrival.

The meal was something really interesting to me. It was Pizza Twist! We had a choice of Caramelized Red Onion Chutney & Goat Cheese Pizza Twist, and Barbecue Chicken Pizza Twist. We got one of each so that we can taste both of them.

They were a nice size, not too big nor small, perfect “snack” before the end of the flight. I liked how it was charred a bit on some spots that makes it look more appetizing in my opinion. It had a nice weight to it with a good amount of filling in there.

As you can see here, they are packed with yummy fillings. The chutney one had a really nice flavor. Sweetness from caramelized onions, a bit of sharpness from chutney, and a creamy goat cheese. The chicken one had a strong sweet & tangy flavor of barbecue. They were both really tasty!

Dessert this time was a Chocolate Mousse. It was Lily O’Brian’s Double Chocolate Truffle with Sea Salted Caramel. I see a slight theme here… I wonder if someone who works for Delta is a fan of Salted Caramel… Well, who can blame them? It is a popular flavor for a good reason.

It was more firm that I expected, but then again, maybe they had to be refrigerated or frozen for a while during transport. It was really chocolate-y, with subtle salted caramel flavor coming through nicely.

That concludes my experience of food on plane for Delta. The trip back from England to NYC was pleasant enough, with a good selection of drinks, making it difficult to choose which drink to order. That is a good problem to have. The food was surprisingly good, better than expected. The “snack” at the end was fun and creative, I like having a different kind of food on plane like that. Thanks to all the flight attendance and staffs! Have a safe and fun flight, wherever it may take you!

  1. I have been looking for that chicken rice and hollandaise sauce recipe, or at least something similar to it, ever since I had it on a Delta flight several years ago. Any ideas where I can get something similar to that which you had?

    1. Hi Misty,

Unfortunately, I don’t have any recipe similar to that.
Interesting fact is that our sense of taste is not as strong when we are high up in the sky, so food provided on the plane usually have very strong flavoring, so that we can actually taste them.
Therefore, if you tried to make something that are made for the flight, it would be too salty/sweet/spicy, etc. here on the ground.
Good luck finding a tasty recipe! 🙂
