Glaze Donuts

I love all sorts of desserts, and one of my favorites would be donuts. The favorite donut spot in the world would still be Mister Donut in Japan. I absolutely love their donuts!!! Unfortunately, it is a long way to travel for donuts….but, there are many other donut spots nearby that I love, such as Mochimochi Kai Sweets who specializes in Mochi donuts, Orwasher’s Bakery with over 100 years of history, and NYC classic (to me), Dough Donuts with huge, delicious donuts! I recently saw some photos of delectable donuts from a place called Glaze Donuts in NJ, so we headed out to check them out! We went to the one in Fort Lee, NJ. It was located in a mall, with shared parking lot. They also have Kura Sushi in this mall.

When we walked in, a young female stuff greeted us with a warm smile. She was very nice and friendly. They had loads of donuts of all sorts, under two categories: Classic and Artisan. The prices are based on which category they belong to, which makes it easy to see and calculate. They also had some basic drinks by the register also.

We decided to get half dozen donuts. We chose Cannoli Donut, White Chocolate Pretzel Donut, Banana Foster Donut, Pistachio Donut, Red Velvet Donut, and Strawberry Shortcake Donut ($14.40/half dozen Artisan donuts).

We were very excited to try them all at home! Some of them were heavier than others, with loads of filling, glaze, and toppings. We decided to have some in one day, and the rest the next day, as they were rather large in size.

Let’s start with Red Velvet. It was super moist! Fluffy yet dense, with loads of cream cheese frosting. Not overly sweet, which was a surprise. You can taste the cream cheese instead of just sugar. Nice quality!

Banana Foster was heavy! It sure did have some weight to it. When I cut it open, I was happy to see it had loads of creamy filling inside. I also like the banana slices on top. Naturally, it had a great banana flavor throughout! Dough was super airy and fluffy. We enjoyed this one too.

Cannoli donut seemed like a popular one, so we had to try it. It had loads of filling with chocolate chip in it, which was really nice. But, the filling was very sweet, as most cannoli fillings are. The topping was interesting, kind of a hardened cookie, or mix of soft cookie and gingerbread cookie. Candied Cherry on top was a nice touch. A bit too sweet for me and heavy, due to the super rich and dense filling.

Strawberry Shortcake donut was the one I was really excited about, since it looked awesome! It was light and airy, with velvety cream and sweet strawberry chunks. Even though it has lots of cream, it is much lighter than cannoli. This was my favorite of the bunch!

White Chocolate Pretzel Donut was sweet and cake-y, with a good amount of white chocolate chips. It tasted like it had caramel in the frosting, which went nicely with pretzel and chocolate. The crunchy texture from the pretzels was fun. They had subtle salty flavor that enhanced the sweetness of the donut.

Pistachio donut was the simplest of them all. I liked the chunks of pistachios on top. The frosting didn’t have much pistachio flavor, but more just sugary flavor. It was a bit disappointing.

After trying the six varieties, we decided to go back and try some of their “classic” donuts. But, with the amount of sugar (not mention the calories!), we decided to get the Mini Donuts. Yes, a smart move indeed!

They don’t have as many varieties when it comes of mini donuts, but if you are interested in getting classic donuts in smaller portion, they are perfect. We got two frosted donuts, and four filled donuts ($4/half dozen Mini Classic donuts). Didn’t know what they were, since there was no signage.

Caramel glazed one was filled with cinnamon apple filling. It had small chunks of apples, fresh and tasty! The strawberry glazed one had strawberry jelly filling. The jelly was smooth with a strong strawberry flavor. Icing was rather too sweet.

Sugar glazed one had the same strawberry jelly filling. Without the heavy icing, it tasted much better. Chocolate one had custard filling, kind of like a Boston cream. I believe this is called Jersey Cream at Glaze Donuts. It was tasty, but I wish the icing were less sweet. The sweetness of the glaze was too overpowering.

Same for the two frosted donuts. They were too sweet, all I could taste was sugar…

And when I thought we had more than enough sugar, we realized we have completely forgotten about their signature donuts! You (and my mother and our doctor) might say just forget about it…but we were on a donut mission (whatever that means…LOL)!

The first one was Napoleon Donut ($5/each). They make them only Friday through Sunday, so if you want them, be sure to get there during those days. It looked pretty, but the thick frosting tasted like pure sugar… Not a fan of their overly sweet frosting.

Again, it looked really nice, but didn’t taste so good because it was sickly sweet. The rest of the donut was nice. The cream was a bit on the overly sweet side, but not bad. The layers of pastry dough was dense, it was a bit hard to eat with very soft cream in between. With every bite, the cream was oozing out everywhere. Overall, it was a-ok. I don’t need to have it again.

The second one was Italian Rainbow Donut ($5/each). I hear this is their most popular one, and only available Friday through Sunday, same as the Napoleon donut.

This one has the “wow’ factor as you cut or bite into it. You can see three colorful layers under the thick chocolate frosting. Each layer has a very vivid color, and flavor for each one are present. I am guessing mint, strawberry, plain (I could be off on the strawberry…). And as you expect from Italian Rainbow Cookies, there were layers of apricot jam in between. There were layers of almost paste with the jam, which was nice. Frosting was overly sweet, which at this point was expected. The donut itself was quite sweet, and it being coated with overly sweet frosting was too much for me to handle…I peeled of some of the frosting to be able to eat it. Fun donut for sure to look at, but I don’t need to have it again…

What I learned from this donut mission is that I like their donuts if they don’t have any frosting on it. If I go back to Glaze Donuts, I will stay away from any frosted donuts, and another one of the strawberry shortcake donut…
