Mochimochi Kai Sweets

It seems like this year was the year of mochi donuts. We tried some mochi donuts from The Dough Club towards the beginning of the year, and since then, I started to see this “Pon de Ring” style mochi donuts popping up at other places. When we heard that there is a popular mochi donut spot inside our favorite supermarket, Mitsuwa, called Mochimochi Kai Sweets, we just had to go and get some!

It is located inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace, near the entrance/exit. Just take a left when you enter, go down to the end, and you will find Kai Sweet. Here, you can get some crepes, cakes, cream puffs, and light fares. We tried some sweets from here, and they are pretty tasty. They added a little shop right next to it, called Mochimochi Kai Sweets. Here, you can get all sorts of mochi donuts! They have “Today’s Mochi Donuts” on the wall for you to see and choose from on the wall while you wait in the line.

But, if you can get to the display window to actually look at these sweet jewels, that would be best! I mean, look at them! I wanted them all, but we were only going to get half-dozen ($15/6 donuts), so we had to make some difficult choices…

So, here are our choices! We got Dark Chocolate, Matcha, Raspberry Chocolate, Black Sesame, Strawberry Cream, and Yuzu. They are $3 each (including tax), but they do “Buy 5 Get 1 Free” price. So, you can get 6 donuts for $15.

The first one we tried was Raspberry Chocolate Mochi Donut. The donut itself was very fluffy, moist, and chewy like mochi in a good way. Not greasy in any way. It felt light yet super satisfying! Just the right amount of frosting, nice raspberry flavor with good amount of chocolate chips.

Black Sesame Mochi Donut was really delicious! Great black sesame flavor, not too sweet but elegantly sweet. Really loved the flavor! I could have this one every day and not get tired of it… And you can see how airy the dough is, they really do a great mochi donut here at Mochimochi Kai Sweets!

Matcha Mochi Donut had REAL matcha flavor that was amazing! It had a little bitterness that comes from matcha, having a nice balance with the sweetness. My taste buds were having one big party! And you can see how they coat the top of the donut so perfectly… Love it!

Strawberry Cream Mochi Donut was another delightful one, it almost tasted like a strawberry shake. With one bite, it takes you to a magical world… Did someone say rainbows and unicorn?

Dark Chocolate Mochi Donut was good too. I really liked the white chocolate on top, nice combination of a bitter and sweet. Although, the dark chocolate was not so bitter, but just right amount of bitterness to it.

Here, you can see how perfect the mochi dough is…as you tear them apart, they give a nice little stretch, as they should, before it finally comes apart. Not all mochi donut from other places are like this, some are a bit too greasy, or overcooked, or some other cause, it doesn’t give that nice doughy, mochi-like texture. I really enjoyed the texture from Mochimochi Kai Sweets!

Last but not least, Yuzu Mochi Donut. It had a great flavor! I loved the candied yuzu (?) pieces on top. The frosting was light and packed with yuzu flavor. You could really taste the yuzu with each bite. Great ending to our donut adventures!

We tried Chinese version of mochi donut from The Dough Club, Korean version from Mochinut, and now, Japanese version from Mochimochi Kai Sweets. The verdict? I say Mochimochi is #1, followed by The Dough Club taking the #2 spot. Maybe since Japanese people have been making pon de ring mochi donuts for a long time (in Japan), they have perfected it. Mochimochi Kai Sweets offers different flavors, including seasonal flavors, so I am sure we will be going back to Mochimochi Kai Sweets again and again!

  1. They are the best airy & light, I’m hooked, I don’t even eat doughnuts, but these have a different texture & their not greasy or heavy. Love them.

  2. Love love the donuts. I want to buy for my niece, but she is allergic to tree nuts. Does any of the donuts have tree nuts?

    1. Hello Catherine,

      I love their donuts too!
I don’t have any information on tree nuts, it would be best if you contact the shop directly.

      Have a great day! πŸ™‚
