When we were in Tokyo, I wanted to go to this really cool, intriguing coffee shop called Sukemasa Coffee. It was a bit hidden in a peaceful spot, behind a busy street of Asakusa, right by Hanayashiki amusement park. Their photos looked really interesting, and I was very curious to check them out. We first visited in the beginning of 2025. We arrived a few minutes before opening time, and there were already 3 parties waiting by the door.

The inside is rather small, with small amount of seating along the wall. They have a complimentary water with cups on antique-looking sawing table, which was pretty cool. A few things to note: They are cash only, so be sure to bring cash. During the busy hours, they have a time limit of 30 minutes maximum. As this is a cafe with desserts spot, you could finish up everything in 30 minutes and make the room for the customer waiting in line. Also, there is a 1 drink minimum order per customer. The staffs speak English well.

My hubby really wanted the popular Japanese sweet sandwich called “fruit sando” but they were out of them. But not to worry, they have so many enticing desserts to choose from! We ordered Pumpkin and Whipped Cream Toast (820 yen/$5.25 Jan 2025), Sweet Potato Mont Blanc Puff (820 yen/$5.25 Jan 2025). For drink, we both got Brûlée Latte (600 yen/$3.90 Jan 2025). Just look at these beauties!

Their logo depicts the front of lady’s kimono. All the staffs here wears kimono made with jeans material, how cool is that? Once you order and pay, find a seat and wait patiently for the masterpiece. They make everything right there per order. Most desserts are assembled to order. Brûlée Latte was fun to drink, it had a thin, hardened and torched sugar on top, you break and mix, and you see this beautiful creamy foam. It was somehow not too sweet, but just right and elegantly sweet. I don’t know how they do it!

Since they make everything so precise and perfect, it takes a bit for them to make the drinks and desserts. Desserts are beautifully constructed, and they tasted as amazing as they looked. Pumpkin and Whipped Cream Toast had perfectly toasted sliced bread, creamy and rich pumpkin purée, topped with light and airy whipped cream. It was not overly sweet, which was great. I love the sweetness level of Japanese desserts. It is always elegantly sweet, never sickly sweet.

Sweet Potato Mont Blan Puff was made with purple sweet potato, so it had this beautiful deep purple color. to our surprise, it had merengue in the middle, which was a nice surprise. It was very light yet creamy. On the bottom was a light cream. All sandwiched between airy choux puff. Again, it was not overly sweet but just right. Seriously, how do they do it?

They have a gender-neutral bathroom in the back. It is a small bathroom, but kept nice and clean.

When we traveled back to Japan the following winter, we went back to Sukemasa Coffee in January of 2026. This time, my hubby’s dream of fruit sando came true… The content of the sandwich changes based on what fruit is in season. On this day, they had Mandarin Orange and Strawberry Sandwich (1,500 yen/$9.70 Jan 2026). We also order the Sweet Potato Mont Blank Puff again.

Their fruit sando were simply beautiful! Nice volume, it could be a breakfast or even a lunch for someone who just want a small bite. The oranges were super juicy, although the one in the middle was slightly hard to eat, as it was a really nice sized orange. The strawberry is the special Japanese “Amaou” strawberry. These strawberries are known for their extra juicy, sweet flavors. This sandwich had sweet bean paste in it as well, which we loved. The whipped cream was light, not too sweet, as you can imagine from everything else that they make here. I say they were excellent fruit sando, we are so happy we revisit Sukemasa Coffee again!

The Sweet Potato Mont Blank Puff was as good as I remembered, did not disappoint at all. Beautifully created, loaded with velvety cream… every bite was a dream. The price has not gone up, and the quality remains super high.

For drinks, we ordered the Brûlée Latte (900 yen/$5.80 Jan 2026) again, and Cafe Mocha (900 yen/$5.80 Jan 2026). Cafe Mocha was artistically made, creamy foam, beautiful combination of coffee and chocolate flavor. It was a great Mocha, I would definitely try that again.

We had great visits to Sukemasa Coffee. Everything was just amazing, the coffee is real deal here, aromatic, deep and earthy with cocoa notes. They have a nice espresso machine that grinds coffee beans nicely, so they are fresh and tasty. The desserts are like artworks, beautiful to look at, and even better to eat… They have so many other offerings, so I am sure we will return again during our future trips to Japan!
