MIFUNE New York #3

Mifune is one of my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city. We had several amazing meals here (you can read about it here: http://www.foodlovergirl.com/mifune-new-york/http://www.foodlovergirl.com/mifune-new-york-2/ ), and brought a few people here too. And yes, they all enjoyed the food. I have been wanting to try their lunch menu ever since they started to offer lunch during week days. Finally, I had the chance to go during the lunch time on one weekdays!

To start off, we ordered Marinated Tomato, Burrata Cheese, and Herb Salad ($11) and Soy Milk Vichyssoise with Caviar ($13). Beautifully plated as always… I really liked how they came on top of a wood slice as a serving plate!

The marinated tomato dish was super fresh with mild sweetness that went perfectly against the acidic tomatoes. It was a super hot and humid day, this dish was just wonderful after sweating! The soy milk dish was creamy and velvety, with elegant flavoring. The caviar added the pop of texture and flavor, really nice dishes to start off the lunch.

For the main dishes, the first one we chose was Angus Skirt Steak ($30) with Black Garlic Sauce. Their entrée comes with rice, miso soup, organic vegetable salad, and three side dishes. The amount steak on the plate was really nice! The steak was soft and a bit more chewy than I expected. The seasoning and sauce were excellent, as the chef is trained in France. The salad was fresh and crispy.

Nothing is ordinary or sub-par here, even rice and miso soup was tasty and Sophisticated!

The side dishes included eggplant and pickled veggies which was prepared with excellence, might not look like much but they were pretty nice!

The third side dish was Chawanmushi, which is a Japanese egg custard dish, cooked in a steam pot. Usually, this dish is served hot, but this one was cold, which was nice for the Summer. It had some dried seaweed on top, which was interesting. Creamy and comforting, simple yet elegant.

The other dish of the choice was Shinshu Soba Noodle with Chicken Broth Soup and Mini Chirashi Box. ($28). This one also comes with all the side dishes other than rice and miso soup, as it already have a rice dish and soup.

The soba was cooked just right, with chicken broth that was more than just broth. It had onions and chicken in it, hearty and earthy. They also brought a small pot to go with this dish. I was told to add more to the broth if the flavor is too strong. To me, I liked the flavor as is, so I didn’t add anything to it.

The salad was again very fresh and crisp, high quality and refreshing. Mini Chirashi Box was smaller than I expected, with not much sashimi pieces. BUT, it was really tasty! The only issue was that there was rather good sized fish bone in the sashimi, I almost chipped my tooth… I feel like I have some kind of bad luck when it comes to bones in the food… This was the first time that ever happened to me here at Mifune, but you might want to be careful when you are eating any kind of meat or fish anywhere you go. Other than that, the sashimi was fresh and had just the right amount of seasoning. Sweet vinegar on sushi rice was just right. Having just a little soy sauce based sauce that was drizzled in the chirashi box was great, didn’t need anything else.

It is a bit pricey when you consider lunch price, but the quality is super high and yes, delicious. I am glad I got to try their lunch menu, since I won’t be able to do that due to my work location. If you are in the area and want to get some fancy, fabulous, high quality lunch, you know where to go!
