Red Feather – CLOSED

We were looking for a brunch spot, and we were feeling some kind of Asian food. We found Red Feather near Washington Square Park. There are several steps up to the restaurant entrance, not accessible from what I could see.

The inside was a bit smaller that I thought it would be. The exterior and the stairs leading up to the entrance door made it look bigger than it actually is in the inside. The decor was modern, more upscale feel to it than some other Asian spots in the Greenwich Village. They had a fully stocked bar, again with modern display.

The side facing the street was covered with enormous windows, providing natural light and a nice view. A staff brought us glasses and a bottle of water once we were seated. I always like having our own big bottle of water so that we don’t have to keep asking for a refill…

We wanted to start off with a cup of coffee, but they seem to NOT offer regular cup of coffee. So, we ordered French Press Coffee ($7/12 oz). I asked the staff if it is enough for us to share between the two of us, and he doesn’t think it is enough to share. So, we ordered two French Press Coffee, with a side of milk. It had enough for three cups, so depends on how much coffee you want to drink, you can either order one for person, or you can share. The amount of milk we had was quite small, and since I like to have a good amount of milk with my coffee, it was certainly not enough… It was not easy to get the attention of a staff get more milk… The coffee felt a bit weak, and we didn’t get a spoon… Let me point out that they opened up just last summer, so they might not figured out everything 100% just yet.

I have seen a really nice pictures of their garlic pull-apart bread, but my luck would have it, they don’t offer that during brunch. So, we settled for their regular Pull-apart Rolls ($9). It comes with Brown Butter and Seasonal Jam. The way it was presented was really nice, I love the simple yet warm and sophisticated look that the combinations of color and serving plates it provided.

The bread was very soft and light as a cloud. they came out very hot, perfect beginning for a nice brunch. Brown butter was awesome, and the jam was really good too.

Now, I know we were feeling Asian food, but Red Feather is not full-on Asian food restaurant. They offer dishes with Southeast Asian influence, but with twists and more unique on its own way. We ordered RF B.E.C. ($19) and Everything Bagel Plate ($25).

RF B.E.C. is made with Sambal Glazed Pork Belly, Fried Egg, Cabbage Pickle, Everything Bagel, and Taro Chips or Salad. I chose Taro Chips because I thought it would be more interesting.

The bagel sandwich had a nice kick to it from the pickled cabbage. Bagels were soft and doughy, nicely toasted without becoming hardened. Egg was cooked to perfection. Pork Belly was nice too, thickly sliced, moist and juicy. It was quite tasty, better than I expected, which is always a good thing.

Taro chips were nice too. Very crispy with great seasoning. Thin and crunchy, addictive chips.

Everything Bagel Plate comes with Scallion Cream cheese, Potatoes, Blistered tomatoes, Two Eggs, and a choice of Bacon or Breakfast Sausage. My hubby went with sausage. This is a bit pricey dish, but it came with a whole lot of stuff! Good thing my husband was really hungry.

Bagels here were also nice, doughy and very filling. Cream cheese was good too. Potatoes were cooked nicely, simple yet comforting. Don’t remember tomatoes… Maybe they replaced it with sauteed veggies? The veggies were nice, so no complaints there. Sausage was interesting, it had a slight kick to it, and the flavor and texture reminded me of some kind of Chinese sausage rather than regular breakfast sausage. Not a big fan of this sausage.

They have one gender neutral bathroom next to their bar. They have sinks right outside of the bathroom, if you just want to wash your hands. I always appreciate having a sink you can access without getting in a line to go to the bathroom.

Bathroom was roomy and clean. Simple, well-lit, and yes, it has its own little sink here too.

We had a nice brunch here. The staffs were friendly and polite. As the restaurant got nearly full, it was difficult to get their attention, as there were only two staffs on the floor. It is good that they are getting popular and busy, maybe they will consider adding another staff or two soon… The food was tasty, and with bagels, we were very much stuffed. If you are looking for an interesting brunch food with Asian touch, try Red Feather.
