The Auld Dubliner

While attending a conference, I needed to get a quick lunch nearby. Across from the Convention Center, I found this Irish bar and restaurant. Since it was around the Halloween time, it was decorated heavily with Halloween decoration. It had a nice outdoor seating, pretty big size with a very wide sidewalk.

The inside was full of interesting items on the wall, all about Ireland, Guinness, and old memorabilia. Good amount of seating, with a nice space in between. Easy to walk around, we don’t see this much of open space in a typical NYC restaurant! Within a few seconds, a very nice and welcoming bartender greeted me and told me to sit wherever I’d like. Chilling atmosphere, casual and cozy.

They had a bar in the middle, with more seating on both sides, full of more memorabilia. It was fun to look around everywhere. They also had lots of pirate stuff, really fun vibe in here! There was a wall full of police patches too, from allover California, and one from Dublin. Pretty cool! Their bar was big, fully stocked, and serving all sorts of beers.

I arrived before the lunch rush, so it was not too crowded. I first sat at a large table for four, even though I was alone. But then, I felt bad about taken up a large table by myself, so I moved to the bar. The bartender saw that and he thanked me for my consideration. They had a really funny digital clock counting down to St. Patrick day, celebrating it all year long!

I wanted fish and chips, but I also wanted curry chips… so, I asked the bartender if I could get fish and chips with curry sauce, and he said “Sure!” He even asked if I wanted on the top or on the side. How nice! I asked the curry sauce to be on the side.

The Fish and Chips ($18) is made with haddock, comes with tartar sauce. It came piping hot and it was HUGE!!!! Never seen anything like this before! I tried to show how incredibly huge it is with my hand and Metro Card, but I don’t think the photos really show how big it was… I really wished if my husband was there with to share this dish with me…

The batter was super crispy and crunchy, not greasy at all. The fish was amazing, juicy and flakey, so delicious! One of the BEST fish and chips I have ever had! I was so full after about half way done, and I had to give up… I took the rest back to my hotel for later.

Now, the side of Irish style Curry Sauce ($2.50), it tasted very different from what I imagined it would be… The chips were good, nice texture and potato-y. The curry sauce was sweet with a little kick that came after. Kind of tasted like mushy peas a bit for some reason… Wonder if it has beans puréed in it? It was an acquired taste in my opinion. I am glad I asked it on the side and not poured over it.

It was an excellent lunch, I enjoyed my fish and chips tremendously! I had them for my dinner, and it was still super tasty! If I ever visit Long Beach, I would definitely go back to this restaurant again and get their fish and chips, minus the curry sauce. If you are in the area and want some good fish and chips, give this spot a try!
