The Black Rooster Cafe

When I attend a conference for work, I must say, the food provided at concession inside the convention center is…well, not great. So, I looked for a place where I can grab a lunch outside the convention center. The one that was nearby with raving review. I went over little before 2pm, without realizing that they close at 2:30pm.

They still had a handful of customers sitting at the outdoor seating area and a few customers in the inside. The outdoor seating was not big, but good size and it seemed like it was more popular than the inside. The seating in the inside was pretty good, large enough space, especially for a cafe.

As this is not a full-service restaurant, they had most of all the essentials like condiments, plastic utensils, milk and sugar on the side wall. They also had complimentary water on the counter next to an ordering spot.

As we were lining up to make orders, I got to see all the baked goods and some desserts behind the window showcase. Some of them were sold out, and some only had a few items left. the staffs were letting everyone know that they have ran out of few ingredients at that point. They provide pastries made from scratch, and baked fresh daily. This is awesome, but also limits the amount of baked good that they can provide in a day, especially popular items. Their menu is also limited, they offer croissants, buns, desserts, pastry, and artisan bread.

As people were making an order with the staff, the staff started to let everyone in the line know that they have ran out of some ingredients, such as baguette, bacon, avocado, and few other items…Fortunately, I was still able to make my order with what they still have available. I started with a couple of their macarons, always good to have desserts first, especially if you have to wait for your food to be prepared. The first one was Strawberries & Cream ($2.50). It was a good size, not too small, but medium size.

It looked like a regular macaron with strawberry flavored meringue cookies with cream filling. After one bite, I was in for a nice surprise. It had real strawberry jam in the center! How awesome! With the vanilla cream and high quality strawberry jam, it totally made it to be a great strawberry and cream macaron. Quite genius.

The second one was Carrot Cake macaron ($2.50). Again, it was a good size, not too small and satisfying. The price tag makes sense for a macaron this size, and thinking that they are made fresh daily, it is so worth every penny.

This one was really good too, and it also came with a surprise in the middle. Moist and creamy, rich and tasty. I was not sure what it had in the middle, I could taste the cinnamon, almost like having a small bits of carrot cake in the middle. The staffs didn’t know what the ingredients are, since they are not the chefs. Regardless, it was delicious!

They also offer some sandwiches with in-house baked bread. I ordered Park Hill Ham ($6.50), made with Ham, Brie Cheese, and Peach Preserves. Luckily, they didn’t ran out of the filling of this sandwich yet. I wanted to have the sandwich on croissant, but guess what, yes, they were out of croissant…so I went with Brioche instead. Since the sandwich is made to order, it took a while before it came out. Since I didn’t add any side orders like a fruit cup or chips, it came with a piece of a carrot and an olive.

The sandwich was not too big but had good height to it with lots of ham! The ham tasted very fresh, soft and tender. Brie was great and went great with peach preserves. Soft brioche bread was warm and buttery, and toasted to perfection! Fluffy bread, sandwiching decadent ham, rich cheese and sweet peach preserves, a perfect marriage that produced a happy family that is oh-so-tasty!

Their bathroom is located through the door next to the condiment wall to the back.

It is to the right after you go through the door. The bathroom was nice and large for a cafe of good size. Even thought it is a typical public restroom, the walls and decoration were very pretty.

It had a large artwork on the wall, nice sink and corner table with flowers, and a mirror to help you get yourself ready for the real world again. Always nice to be in a place with a clean, spacious bathroom.

The sandwich and macarons were certainly high quality, well made, and satisfying. The staffs were very nice and friendly. I really enjoyed my late lunch here. I would’ve went back for more if I had the time, but sadly, I didn’t… But now I know where to get some quality food if I am back in Fort Worth!
